. . .
My abstract icons are born on the threshold where the visible and the invisible, the immanent and the transcendent, the temporal and the eternal meet, enter into dialogue, and reveal one another.
Drawing on the tradition of Byzantine iconography, I reinterpret the icon as a phenomenological space of encounter – a point of contact between worlds, where the immaterial descends into matter and takes form in order to be perceived.
The icon becomes not merely an image, but a space of presence, an opening through which the immaterial reality can be felt.
My icons are created on wooden panels, as in the Byzantine tradition, where the base itself becomes the body of the image. I combine ancient techniques with contemporary ones: gold leaf, pigments, photography, textures, and digital traces.
Gold designates the realm of transcendent light, while the other materials represent the immanent, earthly, and human dimension. These elements define two orders of reality and the delicate line between them. The contrast between gold and pigment is the moment when worlds intersect: gold opens the infinite, and colour embodies the human. Between them arises a space of contemplation, where the invisible becomes the breath of the world.
Gold, for me, is the living breath of light – a medium through which the invisible becomes visible. In the Byzantine tradition, it is the image of light that reveals presence: within it, shadow and perspective disappear, leaving only pure being – timeless, yet visible to the heart.
Photographic and gilded icon series exploring the sacred and social dimensions of human identity.
Black-and-white portraits, photographed by the artist, are printed on wooden panels and surrounded by gold leaf, engraving, and semi-precious inlays – echoing the ancient techniques of iconography.
Each image reinterprets the Byzantine visual language through a contemporary lens, portraying ordinary people as bearers of divine light, equal in spirit, dignity, and creative potential.
In this work, gold symbolises the invisible divine in which all beings are immersed. Every human soul is seen as a spark of that light, an intermediary between immanent and transcendent, capable of transformation and creation.
You Are Saint becomes a meditation on universal equality and the sacred potential within humanity – a bridge between theology, anthropology, and contemporary aesthetics.
